A swing mooring system is used instead of a conventional fixed mooring, which makes it easier to adjust a boat’s position either side to side or fore and aft. To do this the boat is fitted with a single bowline-on-a-bight-to-each-side, and either one or two spring lines. Sailboats fitted with a bow spirit will have one spring line attached to it, as will most powerboats. The spring lines are attached to a mooring ring at one end, and to a bitt on the boat at the other. The bitt can be placed either near or at the centre of the fore-and-aft deck line and is where the boat’s control lines are led to.

Pile mooring is gaining popularity these days. It is cheap and sturdy. Pile moored vessels are generally moored to the land at both ends. There is a main anchor and a secondary stay. Pile mooring is used where there are no bollards, quays etc available and the vessels can be moored alongside the river banks. A major advantage is that the vessels can be moved without the necessity of moving the base, the pile. Pile mooring is a method for securing a vessel to the land or riverbank. There are four main types of pile used to moorings
